Tennessee, Whitewater Rafting

Map picture

Ducktown,Tennessee

You must be from Ducktown? Why is that? Because you are the only Ten I See! I am not sure that line works anymore so use it royalty free but with lots of discretion.

What I am still sure of though is that Ducktown is a good launching spot for whitewater rafting. Just an hour and a half easy drive north of Atlanta, the Ducktown area can be a nice weekend escape.

With hiking, tons of dirt trail and river sports available this area located in the southern Appalachian Mountains is a hidden gem.

SAM_0384 If you are driving from Atlanta take a slight detour and ride a pig before having lunch at Blue Ridge Mountain Bar-B-Q.

Hickory-Smoked Pork,Chicken,Beef And Ribs With All The Fixins.

3870E 1st Street Blue Ridge, Georgia.

800px-Ducktown-mainstreet After lunch it's about a 30 minutes scenic drive through two lane country roads before you arrive at Ducktown Historic District. Hang around and along with others you might get the temporary population up to around 500.

Just beyond Ducktown you will find one of the many businesses offering Ocoee River and other area activities.

SAM_0386 At Ocoee River rafting, a nice facility with clean restrooms and changing areas. It is a short time before we are geared up with helmets, paddles and life jackets then given a safety briefing.

Like soldiers on a mission we are boarded on a bus loaded with bright blue rafts and set out for our launch point.

The bus struggles up the hills but relaxes on the decline as my weight helps it's momentum. Reaching our launch spot a light hearted and entertaining briefing is given about the tremendous skills required to navigate the treacherous and roaring rapids. Since I have done this before, I am sure my expertise in exiting the raft will once again be on display.

Our river entry begins just beyond a Class 6 rapid with a $15,000 fine if you get caught riding it. We all decline.

OcoeeRaftingPic2 Sitting in front it is not to long before I am attempting to synchronize the team effort in navigating our first rapid …. Uno, dos, tres … I wonder do they understand my fluent mastery of the Spanish language.

Our guide, Brad is excellent as he navigates the river and tells us stories about the area. Weeks before our trip rains created huge mountain slide and we still can witness much of the destruction left behind.

At YouTube you can see one of the actual slides as it happened:

Since I am an expert, I soon find myself tasting the cold Ocoee River. Passing through a Class 4, Uno, dos, tres does not work and I take the plunge. Finding myself under the raft, a familiar place for me, I discard my momentary panic and swim to the surface. Making my way to the side of the river, I am soon rescued after an exciting rush.

Between rapids the river provides an area for floating or swimming and this time a few us take a voluntary plunge. This time I play lifeguard to a non swimmer with a maladjusted life vest and help him return to the raft.

Thug and tight with a life vest, it will keep your head above water and with your stomach sucked in you will look like a super hero. Remember, it is not how you feel. It is how you look and you look, marvelous darling, simply marvelous!

IMG_8750 Okay, who wants to ride The Bull?

With a rope attached to the front of the raft, two for now let's say lucky rafters will get to ride The Bull as we navigate through two different Class 5 rapids. The first rider does a great job and I now believe is a PRCA (Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association) member.

Well folks, hang on to your hats, our next bull is a mean one and I think our next rider ain't gonna be so lucky.

Two seconds into the next Class 5 and this bull is bucking like I would be if someone tied my family jewels into a knot. Our bull rider does not stand much of a chance. My son and I are playing rodeo clowns trying to rescue her from overboard while we are being doused with what seems like multiple fire houses at an oil rig fire. Hanging on to her life jacket for what seemed like an eternity we finally get the energy and luck to pull her back on board.

Taking a breath I am fazed as I look to the rear of the raft and Brad our guide is gone. A few blinks and I realize all the other rafters are here but we have a new guide. Is this a bad joke?

Guide Apparently while we were rescuing the bull rider another guide jumped on board to help with our dilemma and then for kicks traded rafts with Brad. Whew, for a moment I thought I had gone to The Big River in the sky.

More rapids maneuvered with swimming opportunities then our two and a half hour adventure comes to an end too quickly.

So much fun, it now seems like only an 8 second ride. Shucks, Darn it! Ya'll come back, you hear?

Ocoee Yes, Ocoee, we will!

Ohio, Cleveland And Cedar Point

Map picture

KA RoadTrip 063 It is the summer of 2003 as I revisit with my family Harpo's Sport Cafe near Hopkins International Airport in Cleveland.

KA RoadTrip 059We are honored to see that Harpo’s like the city of Cleveland is still proud of our family name.

small_below-zero-temperatures Great wings and cold beer is a better reminder of the good days living in Brookpark, Ohio rather than the frost bite pinkie tip from the coldest day of my life.

Yes, Cleveland can be a mean city in the winter combined with the howling moist winds of Lake Erie. It is here that this island boy received a baptism by fire and experienced the fierceness of old man winter. He is one bad mutha.

Shut yo mouth!

KA RoadTrip 067

No summer trip to Cleveland would be complete for me without a visit to Jacob's Field home of the beloved Cleveland Indians.

KA RoadTrip 070 At Jacob’s, I get my first major league start with an awesome 47 miles per hour fastball.

KA RoadTrip 072 Strike One! And the sell out crowd goes wild!

p169054-Sandusky-Cedar_Point A blinding sun and I am silently screaming with dangling feet as I plunge 240 feet towards the earth. I have just experienced Power Tower one of the many exciting rides at Cedar Point. Located at Sandusky, Ohio. Cedar Point has the most roller coasters in the world.

KA RoadTrip 142 Having regained my stomach, dining at Johnny Rockets is almost as much fun as we are entertained by singing waiters and waitresses.

KA RoadTrip 145 Witches' Wheel, a race on Gemini where the blue cars always seem to win, damn it!

Magnum XL Magnum XL-200, something I am use to, Mantis and Mean Streak that shakes my grill loose along with all the other rides, we have a ….

Shut yo mouth, Blast at Cedar Point.

CCF07022010_00000 Although a bit out of the way, you won’t regret a trip to Cedar Point unless you forget to bring a clean pair of shorts.

KA RoadTrip 109 At the end of the night, I am so whipped I get the finger and don't even know it.

Montana, Glacier National Park

Map picture

Recently celebrating it's 100th year anniversary, Glacier National Park is one of the must visit National Parks. With the west entrance located just 25 miles from Kalispell Montana, access to the park can be quick and easy.

Leaving Glacier Park International Airport (FCA) in a rental car with unlimited mileage, I am headed to the east entrance of Glacier National Park. Although the west entrance is closer, my plan is to drive the loop along US Highway 2 from east to west. Exiting the airport I am careful as the speed limit on the crossing street, US93 is a warping 70MPH!

The road to Glacier US2 follows low mountainous terrain that offers nice scenery as you pass through small Montana towns.

Ebay 068 From US89 I approach the east entrance to the park at St. Mary but not before checking out “The World's Largest Purple Spoon”.

Ebay 070 A taste of what Glacier offers can be seen in the distance but first I must pass fields of pastures and flowers.

Ebay 075 Lake Mary nearby like other areas of the park offers great hiking trails along with affordable boat tours.

Armed with a noise making dry branch I set out on my first hike aware that I may not be alone. Lions and Tigers and Bears … Oh My!

Ebay 080 My shadow keeps my company and we enjoy the hike without having to use my dry branch defensively.

If a picture is worth a thousand words then being here must be worth even more. The fresh air, gentle breezes and the sounds of nature are left out no matter how many pictures you take.

Ebay 082 The full experience comes from being here.

Numerous “just take it in” stops along the way including Jackson Glacier Overlook before I arrive at Logan’s Pass Visitor Center for another hike. This time a slow gradual climb to Hidden Lake.

Hidden Lake

GNP_mountain_goat2_sm A popular hike, I am not alone on the two thousand plus feet climb even a few mountain goats join me but keep their distance.

Looking forward or behind you, the views are amazingly rewarding. Not knowing any better you would “pinkie swear” you where in the Swiss Alps. I resist the urge to start yodeling.

Weeping Wall Glacier Not knowing a wall could cry, I am made a believer as I visit the “Weeping Wall”. I am not sure why it is weeping but the wall does seem all cracked up.

Ebay 113  Unable to offer comfort, I move on.

With a few hours of daylight remaining, I take advantage of the situation to make a final short hike at Trail Of The Cedars Nature Trail.

Ebay 109 Going To The Sun Road is the route through Glacier National Park and at some points it requires nerves of steel especially in narrow areas during road construction.

Ebay 114 With numerous switch backs on two lane mountainous roads, its an E Ticket Ride.

Luckily, there are many scenic stops for you to return your heartbeat and blood pressure to normal.

As night falls, I catch a photo of a Doe heading out for the night.

It is almost 10pm as I make my way back to Kalispell with regrets that my time at Glacier was too short. I am jealous of those that had the wisdom to remain and promise myself that one day I will be wise about such things.

The peaceful sounds of rushing waters without Golden Arches accompanies me as I pass McDonald Falls and Lake McDonald leaving Glacier. However, I must wait until Kalispell to replace my spent calories with a strawberry sundae.

North Carolina, Crabtree And Raleigh

Map picture

Crabtree, Raleigh and Durham North Carolina

005of1 It is hotter than a firecracker in a tobacco barn as I leave the air conditioned comfort of my hotel for an afternoon stroll around Crabtree, North Carolina.

TobaccoBarn My Old Spice is working overtime as I head for a local favorite Mexican restaurant.

Crabtree 016 La Ranchera, located next to Best Buy at Crabtree Mall serves a pretty decent lunch which I enjoy while watching Chile and Spain in a World Cup match.

The temperature has dropped a few degrees as I join a path on the perimeter of the mall and set out on a hike for Shelly Lake.

Crabtree 002 The sounds of nearby traffic fades as I become surrounded by tall evergreens and a trickling stream as birds chirp over head.

Crabtree 001

Unaware of my presence a bunny rabbit hops across my path and disappears into the under brush. As if trying to impress me a squirrel soon appears and does a “Karate Kid” aka “Squirrel Kid” flying leap from the path onto a mound of dirt. I did not know ground squirrels could do that, I guess I am impressed.

Crabtree 006 Eventually I arrive at Shelly Lake a part of The City of Raleigh Greenway Parks and begin a counter clockwise hike around the 2.8 mile trail.

Friday afternoon and there is light competition along the trail with friendly joggers, walkers and ducks as we all enjoy the great outdoors.

Crabtree 010 A few ducks venture onto a crossing bridge for a chance to have an easy meal as a family dishes out bread crumbs.

Crabtree 011 Less adventurous ones stay at home in the water and get their manna from above.

As I make my return a flock of geese is feeding along the path and I attempt to blend in without wings for a close up photo opportunity.

Crabtree 014 They allow a few shots but don't accept me as part of the family. I am disappointed because I really wanted to learn how to fly.

Leaving rejected, I am rapidly approached by a scooter and practically out of breath I am told, “Don't go near the ducks, one time my family”. Then grasping for air “My family was attacked by ducks, and, and we had to, yeah we had to run back ..” More grasping, “Run back to the car”.

Crabtree 015 I am almost out of breath myself just listening to the warning and encourage my eight year old protector to sit down and tell the rest of his story. Satisfied that I will heed his warning, I can see he's content when I continue my hike.

Ebay 104 Not far from Crabtree, given the opportunity a visit to Duke University is worth the trip.

Ebay 101 I am fortunate to visit The Chapel during a rehearsal and as always the pipe organ is not only music to my ears but my soul as well.
